Brown, Cameron and Clegg might as well be Compo, Foggy and Clegg with their lack of good communication skills says political communications specialist.

The top three political leaders are turning voters off with their poor communications skills and outdated images.

By paying more attention to their tone of voice, speech delivery and working on their ‘You Brand’, Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg could help win over the British public. But they are currently all at sea when it comes to their personal presentation.

That’s according to communications coach Julia Goodman, who has worked with numerous political and business leaders to help them boost their image.

Goodman’s company, Personal Presentation, uses her innovative and unique ‘You Brand’ coaching to help train some of the country’s leading political and business figures.

“None of the current party leaders have got their You Brand right yet and the public knows it,” says Goodman. “From Cameron’s nasal twang to Brown’s lack of expression, there are just small tweaks which could be addressed to help them win over voters.”

Here are Julia’s top tips for the party leaders:

Brown

  1. Smile to show warmth
.
  2. Relax his body and stop seeing the podium as a castle battlement.
  3. Remember to pause to show he is capable of listening.
  4. Introduce humour and self-deprecation into delivery.
  5. Use expressive and passionate body language.

Cameron

  • Change the hairstyle to soften the forehead.
  • Use vocal coaching to tone down the nasal twang
.
  • Add warmth to his delivery.
  • Avoid aggressive and thrusting body language.
  • Introduce more variety in tone to his voice

.
  • Clegg

  • Inject humour to attract voters
.
  • Avoid sounding like a rehearsed speech at all times
.
  • Find his own ‘You Brand’ and avoid copying other leaders
.
  • Be more passionate about what he is saying
.
  • Over-rehearsed body language will look staged.
